  1. From the slides, I learned that there were multiple genre changes during the 20th century which is not surprising, considering all of the events that happened in the 1900’s. One genre that really sticks out to me is postmodernism which arose after World War II. In past classes, I have learned about postmodern art and it is similar to postmodern literature in the sense that neither of them follow a structure. Both the art and literature take their own approach to “reality” and they just do their own thing, even if it does not make sense.

  2. The 20 century was a rise of many things such as woman’s rights, technology, innovation, and literature. I have heard of a lot of these, such as woman’s suffrage, the rise of innovation and technology. One thing I found interesting that I did not know before was the concept of pessimism and stoicism and its role in the 20th century. As well as great innovation and technology never seen before, people were negative and had a strict approach to life. I find this strange as life seems to be getting better, but people were facing it negatively.

  3. From the slides, I learned that there were a lot of changes in the 20th century such as woman’s rights, advanced technology, and literature. One thing I was familiar with is woman’s suffrage. Something that I found interesting is pessimism and how people responded to all of the changes.

  4. After looking at the slides for the 20th century, I noticed that this is the time that writing was not just for those who are talented and enjoyed but it is now becoming a thing for people to get their opinions across. Now that things like the war and women’s suffrage was occuring, people used writing to express themselves. It was becoming increasingly popular and I think that this was an important time for literature.

  5. I learned from the video and the slides that going into the 20th century that art became something that was done just because someone had a story to tell or art to make that had no religious or political motivation. I was surprised that when more things became available for people to read it still caused class division because the lower classes read stuff that was probably escapism. With the Great Depression and the two World Wars people probably wanted to escape their reality a lot. And it was easier to get ahold of magazines or books because there were more and more people writing even if they weren’t very good at it. I’d never really thought about genre changes and how they could be different through the years. I found it interesting that realism lead into satire and then into postmodernism. It’s like it went from people wanting things to be as real as possible to becoming a joke about the real thing and then with postmodernism becoming even more fantastic.

  6. Once I was finished looking at the slides, I noticed that writing was not just for people that were talented in writing but could now be considered a “hobby.” Now that wars were going on, I felt as if it was a way for people to “escape” reality and really express their true feelings, whatever those might be. Writing and literature became very popular among the people and I do think that it was a very important part of our history.

  7. From the slides, I have gathered new knowledge of the 20th century, once again new breakthrough in philosophy, in science, in art, politically and history. Politically this is a revolution for voting rights and women suffrage, which are the most commonly studied but it finally happens in the 20th century!!! From my psychology elective class, I learned about the Freud and Nietzsche ideas thoroughly. In the end, I learned the specific historical events that went down into history like Irish nationalism and the specific changes this century cause on art genres like that of satires connection with a corrupted society.

  8. After looking at the slides I realized why writing became a big thing in the 20th century. people needed and escape from real life and when writing you can make any fantasy you want. it also can be hard for people to say what they need to say the words can get lost in your head and writing them on paper might be easier for some. with wars going on people have PTSD and need a way to cope and writing could be one. writing wasn’t just for people who were talented and can write amazing books anymore it was for everyone.
