My Thoughts On ” A Vindication Of The Rights Of Women”

In class we have been reading “ A Vindication of the Rights of Women ” by Mary Wollstonecraft. I found this reading to be very interesting because it showed how the concept and mindset of feminism started and evolved. In the reading Mary gives many points on why she thinks that women are being mistreated. She starts off by explaining how the quality of women’s education is low and by keeping women from good education, they are not giving women access to think for themselves and grow. Then she explains that women should take on “masculine virtues’ such as independence, education, etc. However she says that women need to develop these virtues in order to be good wives and mothers. Even though Mary wanted women to have equal treatment as far as education and respect she still valued the traditional gender roles. For example she says that women hunting and playing games is “ too masculine”. In my opinion this reading really shows how feminism has changed over time. For instance, Mary’s version of feminism was basic education and respect without interfering with “traditional” gender roles. However today feminism has gone further and improved to cut out gender roles completely and to say women and men are equal in all aspects.

  1. Hi Geleya12!

I agree with you, this reading is very interesting because it showed what “feminism” was back then. I use quotations because the term feminism was not used back then. This bit of writing gives us a glimpse of what women were fighting and what other women think that they should be doing. I agree with Mary, when you limit women, especially in education you are preventing them from thinking for themselves and to grow. After reading the story and your blog, I also have to agree that even though Mary had advanced thoughts for her time, she was still holding on to gender roles. With that being said, Mary’s thoughts on feminism are different than what they are today. What do you think, if Mary was from this time, would she have the same thoughts that feminists have today?
