My Thoughts On Olaudah Equiano and Mary Prince

Olaudah Equiano and Mary Prince were both slaves that shared their stories and experiences. Although they both have a common background of being a slave, their stories are told very differently. Olaudah Equiano shares his experiences by sharing his journey throughout his life. He gives details about his child hood and gives details about the different relationships he had with his master’s and their families.

Although he went through traumatic events he shared them in a lighter tone. For instance he shared his experience with a white little girl that was his friend named Mary. He actually shared a connection with one of his families and wasn’t treated terribly all the time. However, despite this he still made it known that slavery was a huge problem that had to be stopped.

In contrast to Equiano’s story, Mary Prince shares her story in a much more vivid and graphic way. She goes into detail about the things that  was done to her, all of the abuse and sexual assault. For example she gives the reader a visual about what happens to a body when it stands it salt for too long. I notice that in Mary’s story the tone is filled with anger and despair and you can feel the pain that she was in. However, the one “positive” thing she expresses is the education she gained and her relationship with God.

Overall I enjoyed reading both of the stories. I liked how it showed although people can have similar situations their perspective and journey can be so different.  I think although the stories were told differently both displayed the negative impact that slavery does.
