“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide” was such an interesting story by Robert Louis Stevenson. This was the more fictional story of a personality disorder. Of course when an individual has a personality disorder they don’t morph into a different person. However, the science involved in this story is what made it that much more entertaining. This is by far my favorite story that has been discussed in this class. I really enjoyed the mystery and eerie elements to this story. I will say that although I didn’t expect that Hyde and Jekyll to be the same person, I knew something weird was going on with those two. I loved the failed science experiment element with a horrible violent monster. I also loved the whodunnit aspect of it. I loved the foreshadowing of the note that Hyde had supposedly written but in fact looked like Jekyll’s writing. These elements are what kept me interested and entertained throughout the reading.
This story reminded me of the movie split. Although there aren’t multiple personalities at play here it reminds me of the beast personality in the movie. I don’t believe that the main character likes when he turns into the beast since all the other personalities are afraid of the beast and try to warn the victims about him. Similarly to Jekyll he doesn’t want to cause any harm. The main character can’t necessarily control when he switches personalities it just happens. Both of these stories also show a more theatrical depiction of personality disorders.
All in all, this was very enjoyable story and I hope we do more readings like this.
I see that you really enjoyed this story, me too. The turn of events and the mood that was set was hypnotizing. And I love your comparison to the movie split, I haven’t seen it but I know the jist of it. Have you seen the movie Jonathan? The main character is a person with two personalities, though he tries to fight it. Falling in love does that to a person. I wonder what would have happened, in Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde if there was a different and more modern focus. Would you still have liked it? Or do you think this story is good as it is?
