This past week has been an adventure with starting online classes and ironing out the kinks of technology. We have started with reading “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” which is a lot different than the things we have ready beforehand. This story is darker than the other things we have read, even the story “The Daemon Lover” seemed to be lighter feeling than the dark streets of England.
Even though I found it confusing sometimes I found it more interesting because of the mystery aspect to it with the lawyer Mr. Utterson trying to find out what Mr. Hyde is holding over Dr. Jekyll to be the sole beneficiary of his will when they are not related to each other. And then it becomes a murder mystery with Mr. Hyde murdering someone in plain sight and then disappearing.
I think it’s interesting to think about what is going on in Dr. Jekyll’s mind knowing that the creature he made himself become has killed someone. He must be feeling confused and remorseful wondering “What have I done?” He must also be worried that Mr. Hyde is going to completely take over and Dr. Jekyll will no longer exist because he took the time to make sure that his alter-ego was left his entire estate should he disappear. And that is interesting to Mr. Utterly because he is convinced that Mr. Hyde is going to murder Dr. Jekyll and is even more convinced after the murder happens.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the story and seeing how all of this is resolved. I don’t think that there can really be a happy ending because someone has died.
