The influence of Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Hyde

I enjoy any story that involves murder and mystery. At the beginning, both Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield dismiss the allegations of something bad happening in the neighborhood, but after seeing a change in Dr. Jekyll’s will they start to have doubts. They later discover more secrets and put the pieces together until they find out the truth. A story like this reminds me of Scooby-doo or the James Pattersons’ mystery novels. When I look at the history of Jekyll and Hyde, I noticed that it was published in the 1880s. To see the theme of mystery novels and murder during this time amazes me about the genre. It makes me wonder if the great novels of today have been influenced by stories like Jekyll and Hyde. Which leads to the other question of, who inspired the author of Jekyll and Hyde. The author adds a few plot twists into his story and has characters that fit well into the mystery concept. It only makes me wonder who influenced the decisions he made in his story.

It is also interesting to see how the characters in this story play such a large role in how the story is interpreted. For example, Dr. Jekyll is known as a well respected man in his community, until later his evil side begins to show. Dr. Hyde and him become extremely connected because of their darkness. A personality like that in this story is important because it adds to the mysterious and dark mood of the story. It makes me think about how the characters in all mystery stories are all created to fit a dark mood for the storyline.
