Dr. Jekyll And Mr.Hyde

This week in class we have been reading “The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson. I noticed that this text was different then the ones we usually read. I liked how this story was a mystery with a bit of horror . There was many interesting things about this story such as the use of advanced science. I really enjoy reading science fiction so I enjoyed reading this story.

The twist of this story was really compelling to me. Obviously, Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde were the same person. However, it was really interesting to see complete opposites of the same person. Dr.Jekyll was a kind and handsome man yet he created his alter ego Mr.Hyde that was evil and vicious. At first Dr. Jekyll dominated Mr.Hyde as much as he could but eventually Mr.Hyde took over.

To compare Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde more in detail.Dr.Jekyll was supposed to be the “good” side whereas Mr.Hyde is ‘evil’. The motive behind creating Hyde in the first place was because Dr.Jekyll wanted to separate that part of himself. However, ultimately when Hyde took over he became a mixture and turned into chaos. Jekyll tried to ignore a part of himself instead of trying to cope with both sides.

I believe the theme of this story is that you can’t separate parts of who you are. Everyone has good and bad sides to them. Dr.Jekyll made the mistake of trying to tear apart of him away. However, that is not possible which is why it ended in chaos. As humans we are supposed to take every part of ourselves and learn how to cope with it.

  1. Hi Geleya! I really like your views on Jekyll and Hyde. I too enjoy science fiction, but personally, this story reminded me of the horror movie “Psycho” directed by Alfred Hitchcock. In this movie, the character Norman Bates has Multiple Personality Disorder after the death of his mother. He portrays himself and his mother, similar to how Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two different sides of the same person. However, in Jekyll and Hyde, there is a clearer distinction between the personalities, one being good and the other one evil, where as in “Psycho” it is more difficult to differentiate the two personalities.
