During class this week, we read stories by William Wordsworth and Lord Alfred Tennyson. Both stories were poems part of the Victorian Era. Lord Alfred Tennyson’s story was called The Lady Of Shalott and the stories we read by William Wordsworth were called The World Is Too Much For Us and She Dwelt Among Untrodden Ways. The First story mentioned by Lord Alfred Tennyson, is very closely related to a fairytale. Similar stories including Shrek and Rapunzel were mentioned in class.
In class, we talked about the story resembling a fairytale because of the the fact that a young maiden is imprisoned and must be saved by a king. It can be compared to the story Rapunzel. In Rapunzel, a girl is entrapped by an evil stepmother but she eventually is freed by a prince that she later falls in love with. I really liked this story because it shows that even years ago, fairytales were still very popular and could possibly become true. It also had its own special storyline to it that made it unique to Tennyson. My question for this story has to do with where it came from? Since fairytales and similiar stories have been around for so long I wonder where he got the inspiration for his story and why he chose a curse as her punishment instead of a tower or evil witch like most traditional stories.
